"Having lost his family, Varus was already consumed by vengeance when his realm collapsed. Not only did he survive, due to Nocturne's meddling, but two visiting Empyreans, Kai and Valmar, were absorbed into his bow. With the Foreglow stoking his rage, Varus vows to wipe out every last Empyrean, no matter what his new "friends" say."
Empyrean Varus dresses the champion as a restrained celestial figure: his robe is a deep blue with purple and cyan trims, his hood and face area are a stark blinding white marked by a simple symbolic face.
In game, particles feel more luminous, balancing bright neon colors with dark void aesthetics. Varus's attacks use custom animations, and instead of arrows, the projectiles look like blisters of spectral light.
Q (Piercing Arrow): When channeling, instead of a bowstring, it looks like Varus is manipulating gravity itself and pulling on the bow with pure energy.
W (Blighted Quiver): The passive proc spawns small puffs of celestial blue smoke. The active effect adds red colors to the usual Q animation.
W Passive now spawns small ember fires. In this version, it's also color-coded—the last stack is marked with red for easy tracking!
E (Hail of Arrows) spawns a gradient of colors vibrating through the usual rain of arrows and creates a night sky on the ground with small white lights of stars.
R (Chain of Corruption) is a colorful braid of three main colors—Neon Green, Purple, and Yellow. The colors spread magnificently to targets nearby.
On top of unique animations for all abilities, it also features a unique recall animation where Varus shoots through the fabric of reality itself. His bow then disassembles and pulls the tear through, forming a portal and pulling Varus through. A similar animation is used for his respawn.
All other animations are also replaced:
The skin ties directly into the Empyrean line by using celestial motifs and neat, rune‑like textures rather than overt armor plating, and it leans on Varus’s three‑spirit lore by having Varus, Kai and Valmar swap roles visually with two Empyreans locked in his bow; chroma options for the skin include Emerald, Neon Facade, Rose Quartz, Ruby, Sapphire and Turquoise for different color finishes.
Release date: January 5, 2024.
Notable updates: none since release, but it uses past updates for icons.
Empyrean is a neon-tinged alternate-universe skinline built around the Foreglow, a volatile cosmic flame that transforms survivors into otherworldly Empyreans. The aesthetic pairs bright neon particles, crystalline accents, and level-based visual upgrades on some champions.
The universe includes the main Empyrean skins and collectible variants like Prestige Empyrean. Many Empyrean skins also ship with multiple chromas and occasional level 2 upgrades.
In lore, the Foreglow destabilized and collapsed realms, creating Empyreans — powerful, burning versions of champions. Pyke is the first Empyrean, while Malzahar styles himself the Voice of the Foreglow, preaching its fever across dimensions.
Trivia: Most Empyrean skins are 1350 RP (epic), with a few at 1820 RP (legendary). Several champions received level 2 appearance or extra lines as part of the set.
Empyrean Varus is a 1350 RP Epic skin in this listing, so it’s not considered rare—it’s a regular epic skin that can be bought when it’s available in the store or obtained through usual channels. If you want accounts with the skin already unlocked, check curated options here: Buy LoL Skin Accounts.
Yes — because Empyrean Varus is a standard/epic skin, it can appear as a shard from Hextech chests or be given through Mystery Gifts when it’s active. Anything above mythic rarity is not available via Hextech crafting, and mythic skins are not available from Mystery Gifts. Whether Empyrean Varus is the best depends on what you want. If you like clean celestial visuals and airy VFX, Empyrean is an excellent pick. It packs a heavier punch than it might appear at first glance.
While it's visually similar to other Empyrean skin models, the animations it brings are otherworldly. I really appreciate the color-coding on his last passive stack—it makes the champion easier to pilot. The way they connected Empyrean lore to his League lore is a nice touch too. It does change the alliances in the triangle of relations (Varus, Kai, and Valmar), but it works surprisingly well.
What really sells this skin:
Rating: 9/10 — The only area that could be improved is the sound design. I haven't noticed anything that would really blow me away on the audio front.
