Championship Riven is a legendary skin released back in 2012 to celebrate the 2012 World Championships.
Originally the skin was planned to be released as just a normal skin under a different name. But when Riot realised LCS was just around the corner they decided to make use of the skin for a special occasion. Since then Riot have released a new Championship style skin every year since 2012 for different champions.
The Championship Riven skin itself was inspired by neon blue lava from an Indonesian volcano called Ijen. For those of you wondering how that's even possible then find out more information here. But if you just want the short version then it’s to do with the amount of sulfur in the mountain which causes it to change colour due to the high temperature.
The skin was originally released in the store during the 2012 LCS and was available for 975 RP. Viewers who physically attended the finals and bought tickets received championship riven with their ticket purchase which they could redeem later. Some players decided to sell their skins online and would easily reach 300+ USD on most auction websites. Eventually Riot disabled skin codes which brought an end to trading them online.
It is estimated around 8000 people received the skin just from ticket purchases alone. After the finals the skin became available for all players to purchase in the store from the 14th - 22nd October before it was removed. Since then it hasn't returned to the store.
This skin was also the prize for the 2015 World’s Pick’em. Contestants had to pick the winning team for each match all the way to the final. Due to it being an almost impossible task only 1 person ended up winning the prize in the end. This was the first time in 3 years that someone had redeemed the skin as it’s not been available in store since 2012.
To date there have been another 3 Championship style skins made for the champions Kalista, Thresh and Shyvana. All 4 skins have been released to celebrate a different year's LCS. Currently the order of release is Riven, Thresh, Shyvana and Kalista from the 2012 - 2015 World Championship series. With 2016 LCS approaching soon expect a new skin to be added to the collection!
In 2016 Riot celebrated the release of the new Championship Zed skin by making the Championship bundle. This bundle contained all 5 of the skins, including: Championship Riven, Championship Shyvana, Championship Thresh, Championship Kalista, and Championship Zed.
In order to celebrate the original owners of the skin, Riot made some visual updates to the legacy skin. You can see the comparison below.
Players also recieved their own loading screen banner, which was only awarded to owners of the legacy skin. You can see this here:
