League of Legends is a very popular game that has been around for many years, yet there are still plenty of people out there scratching their heads, thinking “what is League of Legends?”.
So what exactly is League of Legends and what is all the fuss about? What makes it so popular and why do players keep coming back for more?
To help answer some of those questions, we’ll be looking at how this unique game has taken the gaming world by storm and won over millions of gamers.
If you’ve never played League of Legends before or have no idea what it is then you’ll be dying to play a game after reading this!
Simply put, League of Legends is an online MOBA (multiplayer online battle arena) where players battle each other using in-game champions. With hundreds of different champions available in game, players must work together with their teammates in order to defeat the other team.
This requires skill, strategy and lots of teamwork!
To summarize a MOBA for you, 5 players on each team join an arena that consists of 3 lanes. Each lane has minions that spawn and travel down the lane until they meet the enemies minions in the middle. Each team has 3 towers in each lane followed by an inhibitor which leads into your base. Inside your base is a Nexus guarded by 2 more towers. For a team to win they must destroy the other team's Nexus or make the other team surrender.
It might sound fairly simple, but with several different game modes to spice things up and lots of variation in the champions, the game is anything but repetitive. To make things even more interesting, there is a competitive ranking system that allows players to compete with each other to become the best.
The best players at the end of a competitive season are awarded virtual prizes depending on how well they did. This can be anything from rare limited edition in-game skins, to icons and banners to show off to their friends.
So what spawned the creation of this League of Legends game and why does it stand out from the rest?
The best aspect of MOBA is the huge population creating amazing fan-art and community. Check our ranking of the best fan-arts.
The developers behind the League of Legends game are Riot Games who are often simply referred to as Riot. Founded in 2006 by 2 guys Brandon Beck and Marc Merrill, the company began working on League of Legends in 2008 and has now spent over 10 years developing and improving the game.
Before League of Legends was first launched there were hardly any MOBA games on the market. In fact, the only one that people played was the original Defense of the Ancients which was a third-party mod for the popular Warcraft 3 game.
After playing the game for a while, the 2 founders of Riot saw the potential for it to be developed into a stand-alone. Jump 10 years into the future and League of Legends is by far the biggest MOBA game out there. With lots of other competitors joining the market such as Dota 2, Heroes of the Storm and Paragon, League of Legends is still number 1.
Today Riot Games is a huge billion dollar company that has thousands of employees working on developing and improving the game. The game makes money just like a lot of other MOBA games, by selling in-game items and power-ups that players can use.
With so much competition from other games, how has League of Legends risen to the top to be the number 1 MOBA? It’s all about the gameplay.
The gameplay in League of Legends really sets it apart from other MOBAs. If you read our previous blog post on Dota 2 vs League of Legends then you’ll know that LoL is a much simpler game to play.
Unlike other games, League of Legends makes you buy your champions before you can play them. Not only does this make you think carefully about which one you should buy but it also forces you to play with a select few. This means over time you get better and better at that particular champion instead of just picking a new one every time.
There is also lots of continuous development in League of Legends. Every few weeks a new patch is released that contains things such as new updates, skins and sometimes new champions. At the start of every major season, there is also a massive overhaul that updates a certain aspect of the game.
Not only does this stop the game from being repetitive but it also allows the developers to work on the game and make changes which they think players will enjoy. An essential part of becoming the number 1 MOBA game is Riot understanding and listening to their player base.
